Siddhartha Mitter sobre a arte de Caleen Smith

OS VISITANTES DA BIENAL WHITNEY 2017 vão se lembrar dos banners. Com cerca de um metro e meio de altura por um metro de largura, eles estavam pendurados no teto do saguão do museu e na galeria principal da exposição. Cada um apresentava, de um lado, uma imagem berrante, como um pássaro sangrando no céu ou um olho humano perfurado por um lápis. Do outro lado apareceu um texto (principalmente) de confronto: MINHA PATOLOGIA É SEU LUCRO; SOU TÃO NEGRO QUE TE CEGO; EU NÃO TENHO MAIS NADA. As palavras duras contrastavam com a beleza exuberante desses objetos – as cores quentes pintadas em tecidos ricos, as lantejoulas e franjas, as frases bordadas em letra cursiva que os impregnavam de inocência e imediatismo. E quando um dia os estandartes foram trazidos para fora do museu para serem levados em procissão, foi com o alegre acompanhamento de espirituais – canções de liberdade.

Caleen Smith pode não ter sido bem conhecida do público em geral, ou mesmo de grande parte do mundo da arte, antes dos seus estandartes e do seu desfile fazerem parte da Bienal. Mas na vanguarda negra – os afrofuturistas e activistas comunitários, os artistas, escritores e teóricos que imaginam modos de vida que se dignificam como sujeitos negros, bem como como toda a humanidade – ela é uma espécie de heroína pela amplitude e generosidade do seu trabalho. Muitos ainda a conhecem principalmente por seu trabalho cinematográfico, seu ofício original, que ela estudou na UCLA no início dos anos 1990. Seu longa-metragem Drylongso (1998) é um clássico cult independente negro, elogiado pela crítica, mas difícil de encontrar; desde então, ela filmou pelo menos quarenta curtas-metragens experimentais.
